Common Mistakes
The same handful of habits trip up most traders, new or experienced. Here are the twelve we see most, why they hurt, and what to do instead.
1. Acting before the candle closes
Why it hurts: Signals only confirm on closed candles. A forming candle can still change.
Do this instead: Wait for the close. Use alerts so you don't have to watch.
2. Treating stars as a win rate
Why it hurts: Stars count how many of five checks passed. They don't predict the outcome.
Do this instead: Read the Why and know which checks failed. See Signals & Stars.
3. Taking every signal
Why it hurts: Every mode produces some signals in weaker conditions.
Do this instead: Raise Minimum stars, or follow one playbook's filter.
4. Fighting the higher timeframes
Why it hurts: Counter-trend signals have less of the bigger picture behind them.
Do this instead: Trade with both higher timeframe rows, or size down. See the Multi-Timeframe Guide.
5. Moving the stop further away
Why it hurts: It turns a planned loss into a bigger, unplanned one.
Do this instead: Accept the stop. The next signal is a new chance.
6. Risking too much per trade
Why it hurts: Losing streaks happen to everyone. Big risk turns a normal streak into a disaster.
Do this instead: Keep risk around 1 to 2 percent. See Position Sizing.
7. Turning on every tool at once
Why it hurts: A crowded chart hides what matters.
Do this instead: Start with defaults. Add one tool at a time, only if it helps your playbook.
8. Changing settings after every loss
Why it hurts: You never learn how any setting behaves.
Do this instead: Pick a setup and use it for at least 20 trades before judging it.
9. Forgetting to recreate alerts
Why it hurts: TradingView saves your settings inside the alert when you create it.
Do this instead: After changing any setting, delete the old alert and create a new one.
10. Using mismatched settings in Pro Signals and the oscillator
Why it hurts: Trade Fuel tracks a different trade than the one on your chart.
Do this instead: Use the same Signal Mode and Minimum stars in both.
11. Trading through big news
Why it hurts: Spreads widen and price can jump past stops.
Do this instead: Check the calendar. Stand aside around high-impact releases.
12. Never reviewing trades
Why it hurts: Without notes, the same mistakes repeat.
Do this instead: Keep a one-line journal and use the Pre-Trade Checklist.
